Elon Musks rumfartsvirksomhed, SpaceX, er natten til lørdag lykkedes med at sende den nyeste Starship-raket på en ubemandet testflyvning fra den amerikanske delstat Texas. Raketten er faldet ned i Det Indiske Ocean som planlagt, skriver nyhedsbureauerne Reuters og AFP. Rejsen forløb ikke helt uden problemer, men SpaceX-medarbejderne jublede efter testflyvningen, viser en livestream. Skal Europa tage rumfart langt mere alvorligt? Vi står i en tid, hvor verden forandrer sig hurtigt. Magtbalancer flytter sig, teknologier udvikler sig med hastige skridt, og nye arenaer for indflydelse opstår. En af de mest oversete, men afgørende, er rummet. I dag er det i høj grad aktører som NASA, SpaceX, CNSA og Roscosmos, der sætter retningen. Europa deltager gennem European Space Agency, men vi er ikke dem, der definerer udviklingen. Det bør give anledning til eftertanke. For rumfart i dag handler ikke kun om prestigeprojekter eller at sætte mennesker på månen. Det handler om satellitter, kommunikation, overvågning, klimaindsigt, cybersikkerhed og i stigende grad også adgang til fremtidige ressourcer. Med andre ord: Det handler om infrastruktur, sikkerhed og suverænitet. Når så store dele af denne udvikling ligger i hænderne på stormagter med vidt forskellige interesser og værdier, og i nogle tilfælde også politisk ustabilitet, er det et legitimt spørgsmål, om Europa i for høj grad har overladt styringen til andre. Europa har ellers nogle helt særlige forudsætninger. Vi bygger på demokratiske værdier, vi har stærke forskningsmiljøer, og vi har en tradition for samarbejde på tværs af landegrænser. Det giver os en mulighed for ikke bare at deltage, men også for at sætte en retning, eksempelvis når det gælder ansvarlig brug af teknologi, regulering og internationalt samarbejde. Historisk har rumkapløb været drivkraft for enorme teknologiske fremskridt. Mange af de løsninger, vi i dag tager for givet, har rødder i netop den udvikling. Der er ikke noget, der tyder på, at det ikke kan gentage sig. Derfor bør spørgsmålet ikke være, om vi har råd til at investere mere i rumfart. Spørgsmålet er snarere, om vi har råd til at lade være. Hvis Europa ønsker reel indflydelse i fremtiden, kræver det, at vi engagerer os dér, hvor fremtidens teknologier, infrastrukturer og magtstrukturer bliver formet. Ellers risikerer vi at ende som tilskuere til en udvikling, som andre definerer. Europa behøver ikke dominere. Men vi bør tage ansvar. For i sidste ende handler det ikke kun om rummet. Nattens rumraketopsendelse satte gang i tankerne. Samtidig med at verden kigger op mod stjernerne, har LEGO netop sendt en model af Tintins rumraket på markedet. Og pludselig blev jeg ført mange år tilbage. Til mit eget besøg på Kennedy Space Center. Jeg husker tydeligt, hvordan jeg kørte ned ad den samme vej, som astronauterne kører ad, når de bliver transporteret ud til raketten. En helt særlig følelse. Dengang stod der en rumfærge klar på rampen. Det var stort. Det var imponerende. Det var en oplevelse, der satte sig. En tid, hvor man ikke skævede så meget til, hvor man havde været, man skammede sig ikke over at have besøgt USA. Når jeg ser både opsendelsen og den ikoniske raket fra Tintin, bliver det også en påmindelse om, hvor hurtigt verden kan forandre sig. Stemninger, relationer, og hvordan vi ser på hinanden. Men fascinationen af rummet, den er den samme. Uanset hvad, sender jeg mine varmeste tanker og bedste ønsker til de fire astronauter. Må de have medvind på hele deres færd 🚀
